risk, who has existing hearing damage and finding practical solutions. Organisations seeking her advice include Telstra, Queensland Health, Queensland Rail, Golden Circle and others. In addition to the provision of on-site workplace testing and consultation, Nolene has a reputation for professionalism in the provision of assessments and reports to law and insurance firms. Nolene is a recognised authority on the occupational health and safety issues of noise levels in call centres and has been instrumental in defining and articulating OH&S standards for that industry. She is also sought after for her specialist knowledge of acoustic shock. Nolene graduated from the University of Queensland in 1978 with a Degree in Speech Therapy and undertook an audiology training program with the National Acoustics Laboratories. She spent the next three years specialising in the provision of hearing aids to adults and using her speech therapy skills to assist the hearing impaired in developing more effective communication strategies. After obtaining her Certificate of Clinical Competence, she worked as a speech therapist at the pre-school for the deaf whilst she completed post-graduate studies in Audiology at the University of Queensland. The disabilities of her young clients encouraged Nolene to develop an interest in and consequently to focus her post graduate studies upon the needs of hearing impaired children. Her study and work on the natural course of middle ear infections in children under five years has developed into a life long passion and she is currently recognised as being a specialist in this area. After completing her post-graduate studies she practised in the Audiology Department of the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. During this time Nolene was actively involved in the diagnostic, clinical and medical aspects of adult hearing as well as the planning, provision and evaluation of rehabilitation programs for the hearing impaired. The College of Audiology honoured Nolene with the title of Fellow in 2000 in recognition of her professional contribution to the profession of Audiology in Australia. |
